One of Japan’s most influential contemporary artists and founder of the Superflat movement, Murakami is famous for combining fine art with Japanese anime, manga, kawaii culture and Pop Art. This richly illustrated book focuses on works from the past decade, moving beyond his famous smiling flowers to the strange, multi-eyed and sharp-toothed monsters that populate his more recent work.
Through these creatures, Murakami examines consumerism, digital culture, human fallibility and contemporary social anxieties. Essays and conversations with the artist provide further insight into his evolving sculpture practice, monster imagery and recent NFT projects.
Published in association with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the book features lavish color reproductions alongside distinctive physical details including a plastic jacket, dyed page edges and four gatefolds.
